Following his death on 21 November 1695, caused by a fatal chill, Purcell’s funeral was celebrated with great pomp at Westminster Abbey, and his body buried in its precincts, an exceptional honour, at the Crown’s expense. A deluge of poetic and musical homages saluted this blest son of England, among them Jeremiah Clarke’s ode Come, come along, now unjustly forgotten.
